Safe Mercury Removal
Here at Pleasant Avenue Dentistry, we are well aware of the systemic effect your mouth has on your entire body. The materials utilized in dentistry can have either positive or negative resulting effects; we provide mercury safe dentistry and only utilize biocompatible materials for ideal restoration.
Scientific studies on amalgam removal have suggested that dentist, staff and their patients can be exposed to higher than normal levels of potentially harmful Mercury vapor and other contaminants. Placement and removal of amalgam fillings are common dental procedures that are not always performed safely. At Pleasant Avenue Dentistry, we are concerned for your safety. We have never placed amalgam restorations in our office, and our protocol for removal offers a first line of defense providing a safe worry free environment for your oral care.
If you have old mercury fillings in your mouth, we can remove them safely at Pleasant Avenue Dentistry. There are specific protocols and guidelines that have been set forth by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) for the removal of old mercury fillings. We follow this protocol when we replace old mercury fillings. In doing so, not only are you being protected from harmful mercury vapors, but we are too. Bioaccumulation of mercury in our environment is a global concern that we are well aware of. In effort to protect our environment, we have installed a mercury retrieval system years ago that traps 99.9% of dental mercury to inhibit it from flowing into our local Waste Management system.
Though we have the ability to remove Mercury from your mouth, it will be up to you (with our guidance) to remove it from your body. Mercury Detoxification and Healing plays an important role to ensure your body will have the chance to heal.
Removing Mercury Fillings Safely
When removing mercury fillings, we follow a strict protocol. Here you see that the patient is equiped with a purple 'rubber sheet' know as a 'dental dam' for isolation of the subject tooth/teeth. This prevents contamination of mercury particles in the oral cavity during treatment.
Though mercury particles are of concern when removing these restorations, they are not the largest concern. The most concerning factor when removing mercury fillings is the mercury vapor that is emitted into the air. Mercury is colorless and odorless -- we cannot see it! Our protocol ensures that protection is provided against this toxic vapor.
Pictured below you see a large hose unit; this is our Dent Air Vac. This unit is a high volume mercury evacuation system that draws vapors away from the patient and health care providers. These vacuums clean the operatory air when performing extractions, high speed drilling and certain other procedures including dental Mercury amalgam removal where an oral aerosol vacuum system is recommended or required. It is designed to capture and filter toxic odors, vapors and particulates away from the breathing area for a safer breathing environment.
The patient also is breathing oxygen through their nasal passages to ensure that the air being consumed does not contain any toxic mercury vapor. Protective eyewear is a must, regardless of mercury removal or new restorations.
We as providers also take precautions for our well being; we wear a dense mercury filtering mask during the removal process in addition to our everyday personal protective equipment.
We also take precaution with our air filtration systems. Each operatory is equiped with a E. L. Foust Co. Air Purifier (pictured below). These air purifiers contain activated carbon mix for removal of chemicals, fumes, odors, and gases. It controls particles such as dust mites, mold and virus with a 0.1 micron efficiency. It is used & recommended by allergists & environmental doctors nationwide.
If you have special health considerations, we provide Clifford Testing to test what materials are most biocompatible for you.
